It is currently 9:43 am and I have been in Phnom Penh for a day. I had the worst and most chaotic two days of travelling which included baggage loss, flights canceled and delayed and an additional 24 hours of travelling. But I finally made it after 48 hours and I could not be happier. The PSE center is beautiful and huge. Classes, soccer fields, art rooms and pensions make up acres of facilities and infrastructures for the current 2500 students. The weather is hard to get used to with the constant humidity and heat but it is bearable and I honestly thought it would be worst. My room is...... interesting. It was very dirty when I got there and did not have a bed. There is no AC but simply a fan so the 30°c in the room was a bit shocking. At first, I was a bit stunned but I got used to it, went to the market to buy a matress, cleaned everything up and unpacked to make it feel more like home. I have to admit, the living conditions are very simple and rustic. The shower is a bucket and the kitchen.... doesn't really exist. At first, it was hard to get used to but I barely spend time in the volunteer house as everyone would rather go out in town for meals and hangs out around the center. Everything is shockingly cheap. Water costs 20 cents and you can eat a full meal for a few dollars. To go around town, we use tuk-tuks which only cost a few dollars as well. There is a team of 13 volunteers, all very nice and who seem to get along. All of them are french and two of my house mates are also english teachers. The atmosphere is very relaxed and friendly. We're all going on a trip to Kampot this week end, a city located in southern Cambodia by the river. Kampot was the capital of the Circonscription Résidentielle de Kampot under French rule. Its center is unlike most Cambodian provincial capitals composed of 19th-century French colonial architecture. The region and town are well known for the high quality pepper, which is being exported worldwide. I am having a lot of fun getting to know everyone and getting settled in. I am having a meeting with my coordinator this morning as to set my schedule and classes. I'll keep posting as much as possible! Thank you for your support. Love, Pauline
