I added a new page to the blog called "Photos". To access it, click the button between "Contact" and "Go Fund Me". It contains pictures that do not necessarily have specific stories to tell but that deserve to be shared.

Today in class was like Christmas. I got a free hair do, rings and even a tattoo. I'm so spoiled and I love it.
Everyday, I spend a couple of hours with teenagers that never stop smiling, never stop wanting to learn and most of all, make the most out of everything. Everyday, they make me happy and make my smile until my cheeks hurt. On Monday, I had the opportunity to discover and visit where "my" kids spend their evenings, week-ends, vacations. What some people call their "houses" although I will not accept what they have to be considered a house. A home, sure, but definitely not a house. I realized that behind their smiles, there is nothing superfluous, none of their joy is materialistic. How could it be when they have nothing. I visted a community located about 40 minutes away from PSE. Even today, it is hard for me to realize that this is what they go back to every night. I couldn't visualize them. Those same happy, clean, positive students in this discomfort, unhygienic place. I thought of something so random while visiting but where do they do the homework I give them? On the floor? Does anyone even own a table in the whole community. When they tell me that they watched TV the night before, I always imagined a living room (I know I'm delusional). Instead, there is on TV for 60 families and the kids gather around and sit on the floor on top of garbage and dirt. This is what they describe when I ask them "What did you do to relax last night". I have met courageous people in my life but these kids are heroes and they really put things into perspective. I have the decency to complain about my bed without a mattress and my broken ceiling. Well at least I have a bed and a ceiling, and at least I have a room. Of course it isn't really my fault for thinking that way. I was raised in extremly good conditions so I am used to some standards of living. But today, I don't complain anymore and in my eyes, these kids are the bravest and kindest souls I have ever met. Their smiles carry me through the day and I am so proud to know them. They have so much light, so much positive energy and such beautiful auras. Last week end was the water festival in Cambodia, meaning the staff and students of PSE we given a four day week end. Although the festival is known for being unique and exciting, Britt and I decided to take the opportunity to go to Sihanoukville, second largest city in Cambodia, located on the coast in the south west of the country. We spent four incredible days there tasting every beach barbeceue, bar and food stand that we could see and, full disclosure, spent most of the time lying on the beach like vegetables. It was truly the best. On Saturday, we spent the day on a boat and went around a couple of islands around the coast. We went snorkeling (my first time) and cliff jumping (my first and last time) and it was truly magical. The water was so clear and the corals so beautiful. I didn't like the 7 meters jump as much although I am proud of having done it and would probably do it again (in two years right now I'm still shaking). We got home Sunday night by the train (7 and a half hours didn't scare us off). It was so beautiful and we watched the sunset with our feet dangling from the train. The sunset was magical and the country side never fails to amaze me. |
